Although construction has been slower to apply new technologies to processes than manufacturing, businesses in both industries report that technology has become a key factor in recruiting, training, and retaining employees. However, according to 2019 JBKnowledge ConTech Report, 75% of contractors are unable to find workers who are able to operate new technology, and 40% of firms say they lack the staff to support new technology.
This growing need for workers with the right construction or manufacturing skills and the right tech skills could further exacerbate the problem of filling the labor shortage—currently there are about 300,000 job vacancies in construction alone, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data and Engineering News Record (ENR) in the article Training the Next Generation of Skilled Workers.
That’s why it is imperative that we look to the next generation of students and individuals who have grown up with technology, and who understand the demand and importance of technology in the skilled trades.
For example, CM Labs Simulations, creator of the Vortex Simulator, has partnered with companies like NCCER and Crane Industry Services (CIS) to utilize their technology not only for the training and retention of employees, but to also participate in job fairs and recruitment efforts of the next generation. Being able to show students that the industry has adapted through new and exciting technology they can find a stable career.
